Experience will boost Humboldt girls’ soccer

Humboldt’s post-season run last year has fueled optimism for the upcoming high school girls’ soccer season.

The Wildcats and head coach Rodd Mooney are excited about the possibilities this spring after the Wildcats went 9-6-3 overall last year, where they advanced to a Class 1A regional final. The Wildcats were ousted 7-0 by Sioux City Heelan.

The Wildcats were quite competitive in the North Central Conference, where they finished 6-3-2 and runner-up to unbeaten league champion Iowa Falls-Alden (10-0).

“Coming off a year where we reached the regional final, we are excited to get going again,” Mooney said. “We have a lot of kids who got really good experience against really good competition during the regular season and in post-season.”

“As we begin this season, we are relying on their experience to carry us and using their know-how to bring along the younger kids as well,” Mooney said.

Wildcat girls’ track will challenge in NCC

Things are looking up these days for the Humboldt High girls’ track team.

Wildcat head coach Spencer Ross and his staff welcomed 36 athletes when pre-season drills began. Among that group are 14 returning letterwinners spread out over several events.

“The good thing about our numbers is we are pretty evenly spread throughout the classes. We’ve got eleven freshmen, eight sophomores, five juniors and eleven seniors. When you talk about building a stable program, you need consistent numbers in each grade,” Ross said. “We have some areas where we will have to work on building depth but numbers-wise we are in good space.”

Last year at state, Aubry Fisher ran 17th in the 3,000-meters. The distance medley relay of Landry Lash, Gracey May, Bella Metli and Brynn Malo finished 22nd. Brynn Malo was 24th in the 800-meters.nLooking at his squad for 2026, Ross is excited about the returnees and newcomers in the field events.

Kiwanis Easter Egg Hunt Saturday, April 4

The Humboldt-Dakota City Noon Kiwanis Club Easter Egg Hunt will be held Saturday, April 4, at 10 a.m. inside the high school gym. The event was previously scheduled to be held at the football field.

There will be categories for three age groups: pre-kindergarten, kindergarten and first grade and second and third grade. There will be large Easter baskets and bicycles awarded to a winner in each category. There will be more than 800 prizes! An appearance by the Easter Bunny for photos is also expected.

The Kiwanis Club puts on this fun activity for children as a community service and thanks the local merchants and members of the business community for their support.

Whether you're attending a sunrise service, enjoying an Easter Brunch with family or friends, or just in it for the Kiwanis Egg Hunt, this Spring Holiday has something for everyone.

100 Years Ago - 1926
Vo. 38 No. 1 of the Humboldt Republican (Published Friday, April 2, 1926) shared Church Services on Easter Sunday as the centerpiece of the front page.

While there were no Easter Egg Hunts advertised for the holiday, the society pages (the social media of old) shared various community members plans for Easter Sunday activities.

The County Newsletters published in the paper told of a Good Friday Evening Concert that was held at the Methodist Church with a brief intermission from a Lutheran Pastor.

Tony Beach to lead HHS boys’ soccer

Humboldt boys’ soccer coach Tony Beach begins his first season at the helm with optimism, thanks to the return of 10 lettermen from last season’s squad that finished 7-9-1 overall, 6-5-1 in the North Central Conference.

Beach, who has head coaching experience in other sports, is looking forward to the new campaign for the Wildcats.

“I’ve enjoyed my time as an assistant coach for the last several years. Joe Hadar was a great coach to work under. He actually started the program and it has been great to see how the program has advanced over the years. It started out as a coed team and now our school has both a boys’ and girls’ program. They are successful and the community is really getting involved and behind the programs,” Beach said.

When it comes to North Central Conference boys track, the Humboldt Wildcats always have a say in the outcome.

This spring will be no different for the Wildcats, led by veteran coach Greg Wickett. Wickett and his coaching staff greeted 18 returning lettermen out of a squad of 43 when pre-season practice began.

The Wildcats placed third in last year’s NCC meet and advanced six events to the Class 3A state meet, where the 4x800 relay took 10th and departed senior Tyler Carlson placed fourth in the high jump. Humboldt also returns key performers in the field and hurdling events.

“We have a good group of seniors and juniors. Out of our 10 seniors, four of them are returning state qualifiers, along with two juniors who competed at state last year,” Wickett said. “We have a good group of guys back with experience.”

Harklau begins 20th season leading Humboldt

At 17 players strong, the Humboldt High School Girls Golf team is gearing up for another great season.

Last year, the team scored a combined adjusted average of 231.50, coming in 4th at the NCC girls golf tournament at Lakeside and 11th in the Class 3A Region 1 tournament at Buena Vista Golf Course at Lake Creek.

This year, four letterwinners are returning to help lead the team. Salem Bonnstetter (sophomore), Jada VanDeWalle (junior), Sophia List (sophomore) and Livia Stewart

There are a lot of fresh faces this season as new girls start their first season. With only two returning seniors, Livia Stewart and Jada VanDeWalle.

HHS boys win 3 events at Algona

The Humboldt boys' track team won three events at Algona's Brad Heitland Indoor Invitational meet held on March 31 inside their new training center at the high school.

No team scoring was kept in the event.

Humboldt's Cash McIntire won the long jump with an effort measuring 21-1.25. The 4x60-meter relay took first in 28.70 seconds. Chase Flaherty, Jackson Flaherty, Valley Davis and McIntire comprised the relay.

Humboldt's shuttle hurdle relay also took first in 34.96 seconds. The relay consisted of Griffin Groat, Brayden Roth, Luke DeWinter and Davis.

Senior Jack Guy was second in the shot with a throw measuring 51-7.5.

Third-place went to Roth in the 60-meter hurdles in 9.02 seconds, DeWinter in the 60-meter hurdles in 9.5 seconds, the 4x200 relay and the 4x400 relay.
