JACK D. BENNETT

Jack D. Bennett, 87, of Humboldt, passed away on Monday, May 18, 2026 at Rotary Senior Living in Eagle Grove after a short illness.
Jack was born Jan. 15, 1939 to Wes and Elaine (Northern) Bennett in Swea City. He was the second of eight children and enjoyed growing up on the farm. He received his education at DMT and graduated in 1958. Jack married Jody Hopkins on Aug. 29, 1958 in Laurens. They moved to Humboldt and Jack began working at the Humboldt Sale Barn until it closed. He was then employed with Humboldt Corn Belt for 42 years until retiring in 2006. During his retirement he enjoyed golfing, fishing trips to Canada, farming for Geoff Mickelson, daily card playing at the VFW and many family trips to Las Vegas.

FREDERICK A. HODGELL

Fred Hodgell, 79 of Gilmore City, passed away on Thursday, May 21, 2026. He will be laid to rest at a private family inurnment. Services have been entrusted to Lentz Funeral Home of Gilmore City. Online condolences may be left at www.lentzfuneralhome.com.
Frederick Albert Hodgell was born in a rural Pocahontas County farmhouse on Dec. 30, 1946, to C. Merle and Wanda (Peers) Hodgell. He graduated from Gilmore City-Bradgate High School in 1965. He farmed in the Gilmore City area his entire life, except for his time in the United States Marine Corps. Fred was a devoted husband and father, married to Donna (Strait) for 58 years.

Memorial Day services

Humboldt/Dakota City
American Legion Adams Post 119 of Humboldt and VFW Post 5240 of Dakota City will hold a Memorial Day ceremony at Bicknell Park in Humboldt on Monday, May 25, beginning at 9:30 a.m.

A short program, which includes the reading of the 28 names of veterans who died in 2025, will be followed by a rifle salute at the park.

Following the service at Bicknell, the honor guard will travel to the following cemeteries to honor the veterans buried there at the approximate time:
- 10:05 a.m. – Union Cemetery
- 10:25 a.m. – Corinth Cemetery
- 10:45 a.m. – Indian Mound Cemetery
- 11:00 a.m. – St. Mary’s Cemetery

Livermore:
The Livermore American Legion Otto Field Post No. 415 Annual Memorial Day program will be held Monday, May 25, at 11:00 a.m. on Main Street of Livermore, south of the Humboldt County Freedom Rock and Veterans Memorial Park.

Humboldt's results at state track and field championships

Humboldt High sophomores Avery Fisher and Aubry Fisher both finished 11th and 12th, respectively, to highlight day one at the Class 3A state track and field championships in Des Moines on Thursday, May 21.

Avery finished in 10:39.82 while Aubry ran 10:44.82 on opening day for the Humboldt girls' track team. Humboldt's 4x800 relay unit finished 23rd in 10:17.85. The relay consisted of freshman Brayleigh Angstrom, Avery Fisher, Aubry Fisher and senior Brynn Malo.

For the Humboldt boys, the shuttle hurdle relay finished 15th in the preliminary round in 1:01.77. Brady Roth, Griffin Groat, Luke DeWinter and Valley Davis comprised the relay for the Wildcats.
The other event of the day for Humboldt was senior Jackson placing 22nd in the 200-meters in 23.08 seconds.

LOIS JEAN HALE

Lois Jean Hale, 94, of Dakota City, passed away on Thursday, May 14, 2026 at the Humboldt County Memorial Hospital in Humboldt.
Lois was born July 31, 1931, the daughter of Sabin and Bertha (Kassel) Campbell in Denison. Lois worked as a cook at KFC and various other restaurants. She enjoyed camping, fishing, listening to music and dancing.

KAREN (HELLE) CRAN

Memorial services for Karen Cran of Warroad, MN, formerly of Humboldt, will be held on May 23, St. Olaf Lutheran Church in Bode. Visitation will be from 9:30-10:30 a.m., followed by a Memorial service at 10:30 a.m. Interment and lunch following at the church. Karen passed away on Dec. 29, 2025, on what was her 62nd wedding anniversary.

CAROL J. HOFFMAN

Carol J. Hoffman, 80, passed away on Sunday morning, May 10, 2026 at the Bartels Lutheran Retirement Community in Waverly.
Carol was born March 12, 1946 in Hampton, Iowa the daughter of Walter and Mabel (Baker) Hoffman. In 1950, at a young age she moved with her family from Dinsdale to Humboldt where she attended school and graduated from Humboldt High School. Carol went on to attend Wartburg College and earned her Bachelors in Education. She taught second grade at Ackley-Geneva for 38 years. Faith was an important part of Carol’s life. She was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church in Waverly where she sang in the choir.
Funeral Services were held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, May 16th at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Waverly. Burial was at Union Cemetery, Humboldt. The Mason-Lindhart Funeral & Cremation Service in Humboldt was in charge of the arrangements. www.masonlindhart.com.

Audrey Jane (Benjamin) Rutz, 88, passed away peacefully on May 16, 2026. A faithful, God-fearing woman with a servant’s spirit, Audrey devoted her life to her faith, her family, and her community. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, May 23, 2026. at 10:30 AM at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Livermore. MONTE HAUKOOS

Monte Haukoos, 73 of Renwick, passed away Wednesday, May 13, 2026. Funeral services were held on Tuesday, May 19, 2026, at 10:30 AM at Zion Lutheran Church in Humboldt. Interment took place at Union Cemetery in Humboldt. Visitation was held on Monday, May 18, 2026, from 4:00 PM until 7:00 PM at Zion Lutheran Church in Humboldt and continued one hour prior to the service on Tuesday. Services have been entrusted to Lentz Funeral Home of Humboldt. Online condolences may be left at www.lentzfuneralhome.com.
Monte Haukoos, son of Mildred and Marvin Haukoos, passed away at the age of 73 on May 13, 2026. Monte graduated from Boone Valley High School in 1971 and later attended Des Moines Area Community College (DMACC). He was known as an incredibly hard worker throughout his life and remained dedicated to his work until his passing.
