Independent, Thompson earn honors

Sports Editor Phil Monson received a third place award for Best Sports Story for large circulation weeklies at the Iowa Newspaper Association Convention in Des Moines last week. Monson's sports feature on Brynn Malo's cross country journey was recognized.

The Humboldt Independent and general manager/editor Kent Thompson received awards at the Iowa Newspaper Association Convention in Des Moines Feb. 8.
Thompson received the Master Editor/Publisher Award, honoring his more than four decades in the newspaper business in a variety of roles at several locations including weekly newspapers in Iowa Falls, Algona and now Humboldt. He has been the news editor at the Humboldt Independent for the past 16 years. "His story is characterized by consistency and dedication to his publications, co-workers and communities," the award states.
The Humboldt Independent Newspaper was recognized for winning two awards in last week’s Iowa Newspaper Association annual convention held on Feb. 8 in Des Moines.
In the weekly newspaper Class 3 group, Humboldt won third-place in the categories of Best Sports Section and Best Sports Story.

New horse arena being built at fairgrounds

A new horse arena is being built at the Humboldt County Fairgrounds. The new facility will be ready for the 2024 fair.
Kevin Cordray, member of the fair board, says the newer, bigger arena will be located near the location of the previous arena, at the north infield of the harness racing track on the grounds.
“The arena we had in the past had become outdated and needed a lot of repairs, so we feel the time was right to rebuild it,” Cordray said. “The arena we had restricted us in the type of events we could hold there. The new arena will be one and one-half times the size of the previous arena.”
“With the newer, bigger facility, we can host rodeo events, barrel racing and other events, in addition to all the 4-H events we’ve had in the past,” Cordray said.

Broedy Hendricks state runner-up!

Humboldt High freshman 165-pound standout Broedy Hendricks finished runner-up in the Class 2A state championship on Saturday night after falling 6-2 to Dubuque Wahlert senior Colin Young in the finals at Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines. Hendricks finishes the season at 46-3.

Hendricks defeated top seeded senior Max Gast 6-0 in the semifinals on Friday morning.

Hendricks earned his spot in the semifinals after winning his quarterfinal round match on Thursday, Feb. 15, inside Wells Fargo Arena. Hendricks, seeded No. 5, defeated No. 4 seed junior Brenden Heying of Benton Community, 3-2.

Hendricks won his opening round match on Wednesday, Feb. 14. Hendricks, who received an opening round bye, defeated Ayden Antonelli of Anamosa 11-4 in the second round.

Clarken 8th at 126 pounds in 2A state wrestling

Humboldt High 126-pound junior Tyce Clarke earned an 8th place medal in the Class 2A state wrestling tournament match Saturday morning inside Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines.

Clarken, 43-8, lost by fall in 3:29 in the consolation final to Aiden Smith of Atlantic.

Clarken won 5-3 over Andon Barrick of Iowa Falls-Alden, to keep his season alive and guarantee a top eight finish on Friday, day three.

Clarken dropped his quarterfinal round match on the second day of the tournament, falling 6-0 to No. 1 seed Jace Hedeman (44-1) of Union, La Porte City.

Clark won his first two matches on day one of the tournament. Clarken pinned Beckett Hagen of Carroll in 1:01 in the first round. In the second round, Clarken pinned Ty Scorpil of Columbus Junction in 1:36.

Brady Beers goes 1-2 in 2A state wrestling

Humboldt High junior 138-pounder Brady Beers saw his season end on day two of the Class 2A state wrestling tournament in Des Moines.

Beers went 1-1 on the opening day of the Class 2A state wrestling tournament in Des Moines on Feb. 14 inside Wells Fargo Arena.

In the first round, Beers rallied late and pinned Deken Sorensen of Davis County Bloomfield in 5:50. Beers then lost to Jase Jaspers of Mount Vernon in the second round by fall in 1:27.

Beers saw his tournament hopes end in an 8-5 loss to Brandon Briley of Creston in the consolation round on Thursday morning, Feb. 15. Beers finishes his season with a 29-20 record.

Kirchhoff goes 1-2 in 2A state wrestling

Humboldt High freshman 144-pounder Jaxson Kirchhoff went 1-1 on the first day of the Class 2A state wrestling tournament at Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines on Feb. 14.

Kirchhoff opened with an 8-2 decision over Maxwell of Glenwood. Kirchhoff was pinned in 1:23 in the second round by Carter Lamont of Benton Community.

Kirchhoff advanced into the consolation round on Thursday, where he lost by fall in 5:00 to Logan Boehm of North Fayette Valley. Kirchhoff finishes his season with a record of 38-14.

Mayall places 8th in 2A state wrestling

Humboldt High 120-pound junior Owen Mayall placed 8th in the Class 2A state wrestling tournament inside Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines on Saturday, Feb. 17. Mayall lost a 5-2 decision to Kaydin Jones of Union La Porte City to end his season at 34-13.

Mayall suffered an opening round loss in the tournament on day one, dropping a 6-4 decision to Kaydin Jones of Union La Porte City in his first bout. The loss moved Mayall into the consolation round, where he defeated Jayson Johnson of Tipton, 16-0 technical fall in 5:44 on Thursday morning to stay alive for a medal.
