When a person goes to the emergency room at the hospital, the last thing they want is people struggling for elbow room in a life-saving situation.
But that was somewhat the case until now. Last week, Humboldt County Memorial Hospital (HCMH) opened its newly remodeled emergency room suite, improving the care for critical patients who need immediate attention.
That’s according to Chief Nursing Executive Victor Bycroft, who said the remodel has been planned for a while now. Thanks to the efforts of the HCMH maintenance department, it is now a reality.
Maintenance Director Dave Knight and his six-person staff did all of the wiring, construction and plumbing.

It doesn’t matter where your loyalties lie, Cardinal and Gold or Gold and Black, everyone can have fun and support Humboldt Wildcat athletics by participating in the Cy-Hawk Rivalry on Sumner on Thursday, Sept. 7, in downtown Humboldt.
Activities will be kicking off around 4 p.m. that day and will be continuing till 10 p.m.
This is the third year the Humboldt Athletic Booster Club has been organizing the event.
Organizer Cassie Harklau said the event is taking shape but there is still a lot of work to do.
“We are seeking donations and volunteers and will be seeking help up to the day of the event,” Harklau said.
An apparel fundraiser was just concluded but there is still time to plant signs of the opposing team on your favorite Cyclone or Hawkeye fans’ lawn. Contact a Humboldt Booster Club member, contact Harklau at (515) 368-2711 or message Humboldt Athletic Booster Club to get your signs planted.

Dumped dogs becoming a problem

Lady Petzwa Zue Zue of France (left) was used to breed but was dumped when the breeders were done with her. Ozzy was dumped last week. Luckily the shelter was able to find the owner and get them to surrender the pet for adoption. Submitted photos.

By APRIL KELLEY
A recent spike in the number of dogs being picked up by area law enforcement and animal control has prompted concern.
According to Miranda Peterson, Director of Moffitt Animal Shelter, they are seeing at least two to three dogs being picked up each week, many of whom have obviously had homes but have only recently been abandoned.
“We are also seeing an increase in dogs who need extra care because they may be very matted or need veterinarian care,” Peterson said.
While the shelter is currently full, If you are experiencing issues and don’t know where to turn, Peterson would like to encourage you to call the shelter at 515-604-6242 anytime during their hours of 8:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Monday through Saturday.
