Chicken Ordinance to be revisited by council

An ordinance which would allow Humboldt residents to keep chickens on their property will be revisited by the Humboldt City Council at an upcoming meeting.

At their regular meeting on Monday night, May 18, the council heard from city administrator Cole Bockelmann in his report that he is going to draft an ordinance for them to consider at the upcoming June 1 meeting.
“Based on feedback from the council, I will draft an ordinance on that for our next meeting,” Bockelmann said.

Area resident Lindsey Winter, who has attended meetings in recent months asking the city to reconsider allowing chickens, was at Monday’s meeting and spoke briefly to provide more information.

Winter provided the council with a more revised proposal that would address concerns brought forth at recent meetings.

Olson, Thurm class valedictorians

A total of 112 senior class students took part in commencement exercises at Humboldt High School last Sunday, May 17, inside the high school gym.

Class president Joel Thurm and vice president Claire Olson introduced representatives Abigail Armitage, Eva Fridolfson, Emily Frideres and Zach Theesfeld.

Administration and faculty taking part in the event on stage was superintendent Jim Murray, principal Travis Sprague, assistant principal Jessica Goodenow, activities director Ryan O’Hern and school counselor Barbra Kozisek. Murray and school board president Tate Satern took part in the presentation of diplomas.

Flag bearers were FFA member Joseph Frideres and Skills USA Club member Joel Cowan. Junior Class escorts included Laina Dettmann, Gracey May, Zoey Montag, Macey Rodgers, Cade Birdsell, Luke DeWinter, Griffin Groat and Cash McIntire.

HHS girls edged by Mason City, eye post-season soccer

Class 1A Region 5 bracket

The Humboldt girls' soccer team lost a hard-fought 2-1 contest at Mason City on May 14.

Sadie Hubbell scored the lone goal off of an assist by Kaleigh Vinsand to lead Humboldt. Laina Dettmann made 12 saves at the net. The loss moved Humboldt to 9-2-3 overall.

Humboldt hosts Garner-Hayfield/Ventura on May 18. They travel to Clear Lake on May 19 and host Charles City on May 21 at 5:30 p.m., varsity only, to close out the regular season.

Humboldt advances 10 entries to state track!

The Humboldt girls' and boys' track teams combined for six automatic qualifiers, 10 overall, for the upcoming state championships after competing in a Class 3A qualifying meet in Clear Lake on Thursday, May 14.

The girls placed third in the team scoring while the boys were sixth.

Aubry Fisher finished first in the 3,000-meters in 11:04.51 and Avery Fisher was second in 11:04.79 to earn a spot at the state meet. Wildcat senior Brynn Malo was runner-up in the 800-meters in 2:31.39 to advance to state. Aubry Fisher was also second in the 1,500-meters in 5:07.04 to advance. Humboldt's 4x800 relay advanced with a time of 10:22.09 in taking third. The relay consisted of Payton Elman, Claire Dieleman, Kate Sievers and Brynn Malo.

Cade Birdsell advances to state golf!

Cade Birdsell was meet medalist in leading the Humboldt boys' golf team in a Class 3A district in Atlantic on May 18. Birdsell shot a 67 to advance to state for the third straight year. Dawson Sleiter was eighth with a 70.

Humboldt tied Atlantic for third with 292. Atlantic advanced via the tie-breaker. Des Moines Christian (280) and Knoxville (287) claimed the top two spots to advance to state.

Led by Dawson Sleiter’s 72, the Humboldt boys’ golf team finished second in a Class 3A sectional tournament at Webster City on Wednesday, May 13, at Briggs Woods Golf Course. The Wildcats finished with a 313 total. Des Moines Christian was first with 308. Nevada took third at 325. All three teams advance into a district meet on May 18.

Sleiter was followed by teammate Cade Birdsell with a 77 for fifth. Andrew Nedved was ninth at 79, Carson Oleson 23rd with an 85, Ascher Gonder with an 88 and Cooper Theesfeld with 94.

Wildcat boys host substate soccer opener

The Humboldt boys' soccer team will host Hampton-Dumont-CAL on Monday, May 18, in a Class 2A substate tournament opener. Action begins at 7 p.m. on Mason Maach Field. The winner will advance into a semifinal round game in Orange City on May 27 against No. 1 seeded Unity Christian of Orange City.

The other half of the substate one bracket has Sergeant Bluff-Luton hosting Sheldon/South O'Brien with the winner playing at No. 2 seeded Sioux Center on May 27. The substate final is set for May 29 in Orange City.

Humboldt, 4-6-5 overall on the season, hosts Clear Lake on May 14 and Charles City on May 15 to close out their 2026 regular season schedule.
