Fireworks discharge varies in the county; be aware of laws

By KENT THOMPSON
Humboldt County Sheriff Dean Kruger and Humboldt Police Chief Joel Sanders want local citizens and visiting guests to enjoy the July 4th holiday, but to do so in a safe and responsible manner.
“The state has a fireworks ordinance, but that is superseded by local ordinance. Many local towns have passed fireworks ordinances and some have updated theirs within the past few years,” Kruger said. “In cases where there is no town ordinance regarding fireworks, the state law applies. It also applies for rural unincorporated areas of the county,” Kruger said.

Echevarria succeeding Ewoldt at county VA

July 1 will mark a change for Humboldt County. For the first time in nearly 10 years, there will be a new Veterans Affairs director. Dean Ewoldt (left) is retiring and Wilson Echevarria (right) will be taking over. Ewoldt won’t be far removed from Veterans Affairs as he will be replacing Merlin Graaf on the three-person Veterans Affairs Commission. Humboldt Independent photo by Kent Thompson.

When the guards change at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier at Arlington National Cemetery it is a very solemn, precise ceremony, filled with pomp and circumstance.
When the guard changes at the end of this week at the Humboldt County Veterans Affairs Office, there will be much less ceremony, but no less preparation and dedication.
For outgoing VA Director Dean Ewoldt and incoming VA Director Wilson Echevarria, it is all about serving their comrades in arms. As veterans themselves, both Ewoldt and Echevarria see an ardent duty to do their best to help other service members, be they Korean War veterans, Vietnam-era vets or those who have more recently returned from conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Goodell presents idea for dam funds

Humboldt City Councilman Joel Goodell has approached the Humboldt City Council and Humboldt County Board of Supervisors about using funds from the possible sale of city property to be earmarked for restoration of the Reasoner Dam. Read about it in Supervisors and City Council stories in this week's paper. The Humboldt City Council will be having a public hearing on the sale on Monday, July 3, at 5:30 p.m. in Humboldt City Hall.

By APRIL KELLEY
The Humboldt County Board of Supervisors heard from Joel Goodell, Humboldt Ward Three City Councilmember regarding a parcel of land that is owned by the city during their regular meeting on Monday, June 26.
The 16.4 acres of land, located on the south edge of town, is in the flood plain and cannot be built on. It can be farmed and has been occasionally, but not successfully as a row crop.
“I have been working with my constituents and the Boat Club and we have been talking about this land sale. I have made it known to the council and we have not voted on it at this point, but I would like to earmark that money for dam restoration,” Goodell said.
He stated that it would not be able to be used to reduce the dam’s size.
